TIME released its list of the 100 Most Influential People for 2024 on Wednesday. The annual list, which asks cultural and political icons to highlight the changemakers of the past year, features dozens of athletes, entertainers, artists and politicians. Beninese music legend Angélique Kidjo wrote about Nigerian artist Burna Boy, who in turn wrote about rapper 21 Savage. CNN —For 108 days, Palestinian photographer Motaz Azaiza risked his life in Gaza to tell the story of the war to millions of followers on Instagram, as friends and family members were killed around him. “I want to capture the beauty of Gaza, not the war on Gaza. “I don’t call myself a journalist, I call myself a photographer,” Azaiza told CNN. After getting rejected twice by the Israeli government to leave, Azaiza told CNN that he managed to flee to Qatar with his family after much difficulty. He told CNN what struck with him the most was the “thousands of babies’ bodies” he saw.

In response, Israel launched a full-scale war against Hamas, trapping Mr. Azaiza and two million others under bombardment in Gaza, a tinderbox after decades of conflict. Mr. Azaiza, who had already lived through four wars, grabbed his camera, and stepped out into an unraveling world. But war in Gaza transformed him into a war correspondent for the social media age. Mr. Azaiza documents the effect of Israel’s bombardments in a way typical of his generation: raw footage filmed selfie-style, uploaded as stories. I had one leg on the bed and one leg on the floor,” Mr. Azaiza said.
